Gordon Brown (founder of Excelsior Limousines) worked as a taxi driver in the middle 70′s. The local undertaker needed a part time night shift driver to drive VIP’s in the limousines. They sent Gordon on a 2 day course to learn the trade to be a chauffeur. Years went by and Gordon took on a career in painting and decorating but it wasn’t until 1997 that Gordon, through illness needed a new career path. He had two jaguars and thought about putting his past experience and charm to good use. In that year Excelsior was founded. The reason behind the name was Gordon wanted something that would represent the service he was providing. Excel wasn’t grand enough so the name became Excelsior!
His first contract was chauffeuring the chief executive of Bolsover District Council around Derbyshire and for many years this is what Gordon specialised in.
He purchased his first stretch limousine in 1999 after realising there was a need within the area. He was the first person to own a stretch limousine in Derbyshire; it was a 6 seater, 85 inches long. From then on he bought two other stretch limousines. The second in 2004; an 8 seater, 110 inches long and in 2008 another 8 seater, 120 inches long, gradually getting bigger each time.
Gordon has chauffeured many clients across Derbyshire and the UK, his most famous client been Emma Bunting who he took to the Top of the pops studios, other clients include the Duke of Gloucestershire and even Princess A nne! There has also been one memorable occasion as he was chauffeuring a couple from Chesterfield to Nottingham and the gentleman proposed during the journey! The lady said yes!
In 2012, after 15 years in the trade Gordon decided it was time to retire. Gordon approached and negotiated the sale of the company with a few people and eventually the takeover was done.
In May 2012, Daniel and Nathan Harris became the new owner of Excelsior Limousines. Daniel and Nathan have been in business for many years and own a number of successful business’ including a sports coaching business called Premier Sport, cleaning and ironing company and inflatable hire company. They have also set up Leisure Travel, a transport company specialising in airport and long distance travel.
The new owners have started to make some new changes, first one was hiring their Dad, Geoff Harris to become senior Chauffeur and starting a complete new rebrand. New Facebook site went live in May 2012, a new website going live in July 2012. The vehicles have had some upgrades including some much needed paint work.
As for the future of Excelsior, Daniel, his brother Nathan and his father Geoff and the rest of the team are very excited and looking forward to welcoming new and old customers and adding some more limousines to the fleet.
